Common menopause symptoms
Menopause is confirmed after 12 months without a period. It brings the loss of oestrogen and progesterone, along with lower testosterone, and the effects can reach your sleep, mood, relationships and work. It’s also an ideal time to look at your bone, cardiovascular and metabolic health for the decades ahead. Many women experience several symptoms at once, and they vary widely from one woman to the next.

Mind and mood
Brain fog, memory concerns, anxiety and mood changes. Falling oestrogen can affect memory and concentration, which many women notice first at work.

Your body
Joint aches and pains, fatigue, and changes in weight. Hormonal change also affects metabolism and where the body stores fat, so weight can shift without any change in habits.

Treatment options
MHT, often called HRT

MHT, often called HRT
Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is the current name for what many people still call hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Where it’s appropriate, Dr Robyn prescribes regulated, TGA-approved body-identical hormones, available from all pharmacies, with many subsidised through the PBS. TGA approval means these medications are held to strict safety and regulation criteria. She’ll talk you through the benefits and risks for you. Not every woman wants or can use hormones, and non-hormonal options are available too.

Earlier than expected
Early, premature or surgical menopause
Menopause before 45 is called early menopause. Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is when ovarian function is lost or significantly reduced before 40, and surgical menopause follows removal of both ovaries, often with a more sudden onset of symptoms. Each brings its own physical and emotional challenges. Dr Robyn provides careful assessment and individualised management, focused on protecting your long-term bone, cardiovascular, genitourinary health and fertility where relevant. If surgery is planned, she can support you before and after the surgery so you know what to expect.
